National Weather Service Issues Tropical Storm Warning and Flash Flood Watch

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management is continuing to monitor all of the weather-related information concerning Tropical Storm Isaias. We recognize that there still may be changes to the forecast within the next 24 hours or so, and specific timing of the storm may be one of them. The current data suggests that we may experience a few rain showers moving into our area later this evening which will continue into early Tuesday morning. The steadier and heavier rain is expected to begin later Tuesday morning, with heavier impacts Tuesday afternoon into the early evening. At this time, rain is expected to conclude Tuesday night. The current data suggests that rainfall amounts of 3-6” is possible. Winds are anticipated to increase Tuesday morning with more significant winds Tuesday afternoon and evening with possible sustained winds increasing to 35-45 mph with potential gusts of 60-70 mph for a few hours at the peak of the storm. We expect that conditions will greatly improve Tuesday night as this storm heads off to the north.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning and Flash Flood Watch for Morris County, which are in effect from 10:00pm this evening through Tuesday evening.

For additional information, members of the public can listen to NOAA Weather Radio, or go to www.weather.gov for more information about the Hazardous Weather Outlook.

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management will be virtually activating our Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and we will be working closely with JCP&L and our other ESF partners throughout the duration of the storm.

We would also ask that the public NOT call 9-1-1 for power related issues unless it is a TRUE EMERGENCY
. In addition, the 9-1-1 system should not be used for any other non-emergent calls. We want to make sure that our 9-1-1 operators are able to focus on true storm emergencies and we ask that the public cooperate in this regard.

Please make sure you take care of your animals and don’t put them outside when storm conditions are significant and potentially dangerous.

Please check on the elderly and those with special needs pre-storm to make sure they have adequate supplies and that they have a plan in the event that power is out.

We highly suggest that lawn and deck furniture as well as other items that could easily be impacted by the wind be significantly secured and/or removed.

Potential Power Outage Information (JCP&L):

  • We have been in contact with our partners at Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) and they are closely monitoring this storm.
  • In the event that power outages occur due to severe weather, customers without power are encouraged to report their outage by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), clicking the “Report Outage” link on www.firstenergycorp.com, or texting “OUT” to 544487.
  • Customers should immediately report downed wires to 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) or call their local police department.  JCP&L reminds customers to stay away from downed wires, even if they believe they are no longer carrying electricity. Downed trees may create road hazards, and may be entangled with power lines. Extreme caution should be used. Motorists are cautioned to treat intersections with inoperable traffic signals as four-way stops.
  • JCP&L customers can subscribe to email and text message alert notifications to receive weather updates in advance of major storms and updates on scheduled or extended power outages.  Visit www.firstenergycorp.com/connect to enroll.
